The town of Hallstatt does not have trains or buses that go directly here, so you will need to change vehicles a few times. Visitors wanting to visit Hallstatt can go from Vienna or Salzburg in Austria, and also from Munich, Germany. Train and bus are the two main means of transportation to get here.
Bus: From the city of Salzburg, it takes just over 2 hours by bus to Hallstatt. You can buy tickets at the Salzburg bus station or directly from the bus driver for about 16 euros one way.
You should buy a round-trip ticket to ensure your journey. Choose your stop as Hallstatt Lahn and then take the Monorail tram into Hallstatt village.
Long-distance train: If you depart from the capital Vienna or Munich in Germany, the long-distance train might be the most suitable option. From Salzburg, taking the train will take about 2.5 hours, and the train station will be on the opposite side of Lake Hallstätter See. You will need to purchase an additional ticket for the ferry ride across the lake. For many tourists, this ferry ride is a very interesting experience when visiting here.
